Comfortex is fazing out the Stardust vertical sheers and replacing them with the more functional Ballet Sheer drapes. The Stardust was a nice option to match the popular Shangri-La colors but vertical drapery sheers sales have slowed because of price and consumers tastes. Comfortex just came out with a new Shangri-La sample book a few months ago and many of the colors no longer match the Stardust. One disadvantage with the Stardust (not from me, I thought it was actually a plus) was that the vanes and sheers were separated per vane instead of one solid fabric. Most of the competition including the Ballet is one big shade. I liked how they were split per vane because it was easy to get though and taking down a vane was a snap. Consumers often complained they didn’t like it because it flares and if not turned right, you could see the edges of the sheer and didn’t give a clean look. Anyways, they still have a limited supply so if you are interested, call and we can get a inventory to see if we can fill the order.

We had a customer who ordered four shades all at the exact width even though the sizes were slightly different. In most cases, up to 1/2 difference will still allow the blind to hang properly. When it comes to roller shades though, measurements are crucial. For all of our blinds and shades, each window needs to be measured individually. Never assume they are all the same. For roller shades, the fabric is actually narrower than the the entire shade. It has to be made that way because the material is on the roller. The only place to install the mechanisms and the brackets is from the sides which adds width. There is a 1 3/8″ to a 1 1/2″ difference between the fabric and the mechanisms. Our factories know this so normal deductions are very slight. In most instances, if the roller doesn’t fit snug from a side mount, changing the brackets to an up mount and bringing them in is all it takes to make it work. Our installers actually up mount all roller shades when that option is available. In this particular instance, the windows were old and the was no place for an up mount. The only solution was to reorder the shade wider or come up with another alternative. The customer chose to use shims to pull the brackets closer to the pins. We used clear plastic shims normally provided for a cassette option. The end gets wider like a wedge and as it is pushed down it pushes the bracket closer to the pins. Screws hold it in place.

Although we have provided about 30 of these motors over the last several months, we haven’t had the opportunity to test them in person. We had a reject brought in and we decided to test it out. The Somfy ST-50 is a heavy duty roll up motor made for roller shades up to 35 pounds in weight. This system will pretty much cover all in-home window automation needs and most commercial applications for roller shades. First, the ST-50 is BIG. It measures almost two inches thick and is almost 31 inches long. It comes hardwired capable only and is very strong. Tubing starts at two inches and is made of heavy duty aluminum casing. The upgradable crown can support up to a three inch tubing.

Installation is simple. The motor slides in the tube and connects to an 7-8 pronged bracket. The cord is a three pronged, thick, 110 Volt wire. An optional plug is supplied.

Testing. The first thing you notice is the operation. It moves in a smooth, quick, motion. Most notable is the quietness of the motor. It produces a soft, pleasant humming sound that you can’t hear across the room.

Advantages:

Quite

Radio Controlled

Can tie into home automation system

Can handle up to 150 square feet of material

Able to daisy chain

Disadvantages:

Expensive

Bulky

Has to be hardwired or plugged in

Not made for small windows

Programming is done by disconnecting the power which could be an issue for daisy-chained applications

Conclusion: This bad boy can handle pretty much any home application. It’s quite, smooth, and cream of the crop for motorization.

It covers mis-measures only and not all of our products. It has to be listed as an option when you select your blinds or shades. It is 9% the cost of the treatment. If the blind is mis-measured, in most cases, just send the blind back and we will make you a new one at the size you need. That’s it. You are responsible for shipping the treatment back. There is a chance we may need to use parts from the old shade and we have that right to (motors are the most common reason). Shipping back to you is free of charge unless it is 94″ or wider and you would have to pay the over-sized fee.

We had and example recently for $1200 worth of motorized roller shades. Our customer mis-measured all four but had the insurance. He complained when we told him to ship the blinds back but he did so anyways. So, the cost of the insurance was $108 (9%) & it cost roughly $30 to ship the blinds back. We remade them. He was out only $138 which included shipping and the insurance. He said later that it still was $500 less than he was quoted by a local blinds outlet even with the mismeasure. So, it can definitely be worth it if you need peace of mind.

The decor of any room is never truly finished until window treatments are added. Woven window blinds are some of the most versatile window dressings available. They compliment many different decorating styles from elegant, modern or traditional to rustic, tropical or exotic. They are a beautiful finishing touch to any room.

Woven blinds are made from many materials including wood, bamboo, jute, grasses and reeds. These organic renewable materials are environmentally friendly while offering beauty and style. Construction styles in a large variety of colors, patterns, bindings and backings are available from which to choose. Sizes range from 24″ to 96″ in width and 36″ to 96″ in length. They may be mounted outside the window frame or within it. Inside mounting within the frame creates a nicely tailored look that emphasizes the size of the window. The window casing must be deep enough for the mounting brackets in order for the head rail to fit when fully recessed. Outside mounted shades are mounted on the wall or window molding beyond the window frame. This type of mounting works when one desires to cover an area larger than just the window. It must be used when the window casing is not deep enough to accommodate the mounting brackets.

Options in shade construction include roll up shades with either pull strings or continuous loop operators, top down/bottom up ones which can be raised from the bottom or lowered from the top, motorized and remote-controlled, or sliding panels for sliding glass doors. Shades can be light filtering, room darkening or designed for complete privacy. Woven wood blinds are a sturdy, beautiful option. Bamboo blinds also are as well as being wonderful interior shade providers. Available in pull up and roman styling, they are light-filtering window treatments and add warmth and versatility to any room. Motorized shades are perfect for high or hard to reach windows. Their remote control is able to operate multiple shades as a time. Woven window blinds are also suitable for sky lights and solarium windows and, when attached to the ceiling, will serve as privacy screens or room dividers.

Edge bindings are available which transform the appearance of the blinds and add a more elegant finish to room decor. They also serve the practical purpose of protecting the edges of the shade’s materials from damage. When selecting blind color and design, edge bindings and any linings order free samples of each to make sure the color is exactly what you need. Computer monitors sometimes show the viewer a difference in shade and tone, which can be deceiving. When ordering, order all the shades for the same room at the same time to be sure they come from the same dye lot so all colors will match. Colors can vary from dye lot to dye lot. If shades will be on neighboring windows or several shades will be on a wide window under one header, this prevents mismatches.

Wooden blinds can be up to 20% lighter than those made of faux wood and usually carry a lifetime warranty against chipping and warping. The slats general range in width from one to two and a half inches. They come with a crown valance that is contoured at the bottom and all necessary hardware. Their R-value (the energy efficiency rating) is good, effectively blocking out both cold and heat. Bamboo shades come with their slats flat or rounded. Rounded slats give a more relaxed appearance while flat ones look more formal. Shades made with both flat and rounded have a tropical flair. All woven, wooden and bamboo blinds, as with any natural decorating materials, are quite popular in today’s decor.

The Woven Woods Sliding Panel doors add a classy touch to any room, offering the choice of a light filtering backing fabric to provide soft shade with a gentle glow, or blackout backing fabric that shuts out the light completely. While the bare sliding mechanism may take away from the subtle, natural look of the panels, it is possible to cover it with a valance. Until now, the only valance available was covered with the same fabric as the panels, creating a seamless, finished look from floor to ceiling. The new valance comes in a choice of new wood, faux wood and distressed wood, which adds a beautiful contrasting color and texture to your sliding panels.

The same crown valances are now also available for use with the Folding Panel doors. Like the sliding doors, these offer a subtle, natural look that works perfectly with hardwood flooring or Asian-inspired design. They also come with a selection of backing fabrics and come in an array of natural colors that will fit into any room. While the folding doors have also always come with the option of a fabric-covered valance, the new wood crown valances offer increased coverage of the top mechanism and a more elaborate, finished look.

The new wood crown valances are 3 1/2 inches in height and can be fit to the exact width of your blinds. They are currently customized only to the Woven Woods Sliding Panel and Folding Panel doors, and are available for order at the time the blinds are purchased. If you have bought these styles in the past, however, you need not fear missing out on these fabulous new valances. While the older, fabric-covered style had to be ordered with the blinds, the new wood models can be ordered at a later date. This means that you will have the chance to give your blinds a try and to see how they look before committing yourself to the new, more elaborate crown valances.
